The film opens on the date 18 March 1987 where a walk-in CBI interview is taking place, held by the characters of Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher. The film then goes into flashback. Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar) calls a local police station in order to obtain more manpower for a CBI raid. He speaks to SI Ranveer Singh (Jimmy Shergill) who agrees to send the required number of support officers. Ajay, along with accomplices P.K Sharma (Anupam Kher), Joginder (Rajesh Sharma), and Iqbal (Kishor Kadam), meet the support officers and conduct the raid. Following the successful raid at a minister's house, it's revealed that Ajay and Sharma are fake CBI officers, along with their two accomplices. They then move to different parts of the country from which they're from and merge into their everyday lifestyles. Ajay's love interest, Priya (Kajal Aggarwal), an about-to-be-married teacher is introduced here. The crew meets again in Chandigarh at the behest of Sharma for his daughter's wedding. Ranveer with his senior officer meet the minister of the earlier raid, who reveals that he doesn't want the news to appear in the public domain because he wants to protect his image. The senior officer suspends Ranveer with his colleague Shanti (Divya Dutta) for being irresponsible. CBI officer Waseem Khan (Manoj Bajpai) is introduced, who lives with his wife (Neetu Singh) and child in New Delhi. He apprehends a criminal named Gupta, which gives an insight into his character. A disgraced Ranveer meets Khan, and they decide to join hands to apprehend Ajay and his fellow criminals. Meanwhile, the next raid planned by Ajay is conducted on a traders' business in Bara Bazar in Kolkata posing as officers from the Income Tax Department. Following the more difficult but successful raid, Khan insists that this should be reported in the newspaper, despite nobody coming forward to report it themselves, as black money is involved. Upon seeing this in the newspaper, Ajay and Sharma decide to conduct their "big job", a final raid in Mumbai. After the second income tax raid, the story briefly focuses on Ajay and Priya, with the latter's marriage being planned. She insists to go with Ajay for the final job, but he tells her to meet him at the airport at 4 pm on the day. Meanwhile, Ranveer finds information about Sharma, and Khan orders wire-tapping his phone. This is successful as, when Sharma is talking to Ajay on the phone, Khan procures several details about them, including the names Joginder and Iqbal and 'Ajju' (Ajay's nickname). As a result, under Khan's orders, officers successfully track the crew to Mumbai to a hotel in which they're staying. They plan to raid and hence rob a big jewellery store. Now, Ajay, followed by a CBI officer, goes to a newspaper to advertise for "50 dynamic graduates" with details of an interview stated. Khan decides to embed his officers among the candidates and they are selected. Khan finds out the details of the training process, which includes a mock raid. It is stated that, on the day, the candidates will be trained and then led out for the mock raid in the afternoon. However, the undercover officers point out that no details about the raid have come to light. In order to find out more, Khan and Ranveer go to the hotel and force their way into Sharma's room. He divulges the information about the raid, following a threat of violence. He also mentions that Ajay is taking revenge on the CBI for not appointing him. Khan orders Sharma to make sure everything proceeds as normal. On the day of the raid, Khan takes charge of the jewellery store, and replaces the jewellery with fake jewellery, with the originals being moved to the jewellery store's nearby workshop. Also, he is given constant information about the activity of the crew and recruits. Ajay informs the recruits that he will come in a different vehicle to them. Sharma leaves with the recruits in a bus, but leaves the bus at police headquarters, telling that he will arrive with Ajay. He also states that nobody should leave the bus until they arrive, and that he is going to verify the paperwork for the raid. In reality, he goes to meet Ranveer Singh. Together with Ajay, a raid of the workshop is carried out. Ajay then goes and meets Priya at the airport. Meanwhile, at the jewellery store, Khan is informed that the raid was conducted at the workshop and all jewellery in the workshop along with the jewellery that were moved were stolen. Khan works it all out for himself, realizing that Ranveer was part of the gang and he wasn't a real police officer at all and they were set up right from the beginning. Khan starts laughing loudly and applauding the entire robbery. Later, Khan receives a money order for Rs. 100 that Ajay had taken from him with the message that he could not steal the honest earnings of an officer. The film ends with Khan being told over the phone that the CBI has information about the perpetrators. At the same time we see Ajay Singh and P.K Sharma enjoying a cricket match happily, at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium with their wives along with Joginder and Iqbal.

The film opens by showing a large crowd waiting for Rahul Jaykar (Aditya Roy Kapur) – a successful musician whose career is waning because of his alcohol addiction – to perform at a stage show in Goa. After nearly completing a song(Sunn Raha Hain Na), he is unexpectedly interrupted by Aryan (Salil Acharya) during his performance, who throws bottles at him. Rahul fights him, stops his performance, and drives to a local bar where he nearly meets with an accident. He meets Aarohi (Shraddha Kapoor), a bar singer who idolizes Rahul. After noticing Aarohi looking at a photograph of Lata Mangeshkar in the bar, he assumes that she wants to become a singer. Impressed by her simplicity and voice, Rahul promises to transform her into a singing sensation, and asks her to never perform again in bars. Aarohi leaves her job and returns to Mumbai with Rahul, who convinces record producer Saigal (Mahesh Thakur) to meet her. When Aarohi calls Rahul, he is attacked and injured by some unknown people, and is unable to receive her call. His friend and manager Vivek (Shaad Randhaawa) says that news of Rahul's accident should not be leaked to the media, and instead publicizes a false story that Rahul has left the country to participate in stage shows. When Aarohi attempts to contact Rahul again, Vivek ignores the calls. After two months of fruitlessly attempting to contact Rahul, a broken Aarohi is forced to sing in bars again because of her family's financial problems. After recovering from his injuries, Rahul vows to search for Aarohi. He learns that Aarohi is working in a bar again and that Vivek had ignored her calls without informing him. Rahul apologizes to Aarohi and sacks Vivek, and they meet with Saigal for the recording agreement. Rahul begins to train Aarohi, who signs a music contract to sing in films and becomes a successful playback singer. Her family and Rahul are happy, but when people begin to gossip that Rahul is using her as a servant, he relapses into alcohol addiction. Aarohi, who loves Rahul more than her career, comforts him. Despite Aarohi's mother's disapproval, Aarohi moves in with Rahul and things go well until Rahul's addiction worsens, causing him to become aggressive and violent.He becomes sober for a while but after a journalist accuses him of using Aarohi for his gains,he begins to drink again and causes trouble.Aarohi is saddened by his state and decides to do anything necessary to help him. Rahul feels that he will be the cause of the failure of Aarohi's career and understands that he is her weakness and her biggest obstacle in achieving success. The next day he promises to change himself and drives off. He commits suicide by jumping off a bridge thereby freeing Aarohi from himself. Aarohi is angered and devastated by his suicide and decides to stop singing. Vivek reminds her it was for her career and success that Rahul killed himself. Sometime later Aarohi is shown singing and she signs an autograph as 'Aarohi Rahul Jaykar' to show tribute to Rahul and her unsung desire of marrying him. As it starts raining, she sees a couple romance under a jacket and thinks of herself and Rahul.

A robbery takes place and European printing plates are stolen. Ranveer Singh (Saif Ali Khan) sees this news on TV and decides to take advantage of this to get revenge for a past matter. Ranveer cons Vikram Thapar (Rajesh Khattar) by pretending to have stolen the Euro printing plates, and his plan is successful. He cons Vikram so badly that he is divested of the five casinos that he owns in Istanbul, Turkey. This con is revealed to be a plan that Ranveer made a week earlier with ex-street fighter and current casino mogul Armaan Malik (John Abraham). Ranveer was introduced to Armaan by his friend Robert "RD" D'Costa (Anil Kapoor) and his dimwitted assistant Cherry (Ameesha Patel). After the con, Ranveer gives Armaan ownership of Thapar's five casinos in exchange for 10% of the money. With this deal, Ranveer and Armaan become friends. Ranveer also romances Armaan's half-sister Alina (Deepika Padukone), who is his 50% business partner in all his ventures and spent a night with him to start their partnership. At a party hosted by Armaan and Alina, Ranveer meets Armaan's girlfriend Omisha (Jacqueline Fernandez) and sees a picture of his ex-wife Sonia (Bipasha Basu) in her wallet. He charms her through matches of archery and fencing where he cuts her dresses without her knowledge and walks away without watching her without dress. Ranveer then tells Armaan of a deal that will get them endless money. Armaan agrees to the plan. Later, Ranveer reveals to RD that he is not planning to make Armaan rich, but he is actually planning to con Armaan so badly that he will lose all his money and be forced to become a beggar on the streets. This is part of Ranveer's plan to avenge Armaan's killing of Sonia. He vows that until Armaan is ruined, he will not do Sonia's final rites. Ranveer then establishes contact with Omisha, who tells him that she is Sonia's sister Tanya and she too wants revenge. Omisha agrees to help Ranveer in his plan. However, right after Ranveer leaves, Armaan shows up at Omisha's apartment, where it is revealed that she is not actually Sonia's sister, but she is actually working for Armaan. Ranveer, however, does not know this and still believes that she is Sonia's sister. After this, Ranveer shows RD and Cherry that his plan is to steal the Shroud of Turin. Ranveer will steal the Shroud himself, but will tell Armaan that he is getting someone else to do it. That person will ask for 15 billion Euros from Armaan, which Ranveer will secretly take. After that, he will get away with the Shroud and all of Armaan's money. RD is afraid of Armaan and therefore betrays Ranveer. RD tells Armaan all of Ranveer's plan. Armaan then tells RD to give Ranveer whatever help he needs, but RD will still be on Armaan's side. Ranveer and Alina get closer and start dating. On one such date, Armaan informs them that there is a bomb planted under Alina's car. Ranveer somehow manages to get rid of the bomb and Armaan tells them that Thapar must have planted the bomb to get even for the five casinos he was conned of. Armaan then introduces Ranveer to the Mafia Godfather Anza. After Ranveer is out of sight, Armaan asks Anza for the 15 billion Euros to give for the Shroud of Turin theft. Anza says that he will give Armaan the money only if he wins a fight against Anza's prize fighter Typhoon. Ranveer was eavesdropping on this conversation the whole time, and when he turns around, he sees Alina standing there. Alina reveals to Ranveer that RD is actually on Armaan's side. She then reveals that Armaan actually wants to kill her and he was the one that planted the bomb in her car. But when he realized Ranveer was in the car, he warned them about the bomb and thus saved them. Armaan only wants Ranveer alive to keep the plan going. Alina takes Ranveer's side in the "race to the finish." While Ranveer steals the Shroud of Turin with RD and Cherry, Armaan fights against Typhoon and wins. After the theft, Ranveer leaves the Shroud in a luggage locker at the airport and keeps the key on his necklace. Afterwards, RD and Cherry hook up at a nearby beach. Ranveer tells Omisha where the real Shroud is, and gives her a fake Shroud to give to the fake thief. Omisha tells Armaan about Ranveer's entire plan, and Armaan tells her to do exactly what Ranveer says. At the ruins of Antalya, Ranveer's fake thief Eric meets up with Ranveer, Armaan, Alina, RD, and Cherry. As per Ranveer's plan, Eric gives Armaan the fake Shroud. He takes 15 billion Euros from Armaan and drives away with Omisha hiding in his car. Eric gives Omisha the money and leaves. Back at the ruins, the remaining five celebrate the end of the deal with some champagne. After Ranveer drinks his glass clean, Armaan reveals that Alina mixed poison in Ranveer's glass. As Ranveer slowly dies, Armaan reveals that thanks to RD he knew Ranveer's plan the whole time and he was controlling the race the entire time. Alina reveals that she was never on his side because of her blood relationship with Armaaan. Omisha drives back with the money and reveals to Ranveer that she was also on Armaan's side and she is not Sonia's sister. After Ranveer dies, RD and Cherry leave after getting 10% of the money from Armaan. Alina leaves to get the private jet ready, while Armaan and Omisha retrieve the real Shroud from Ranveer's luggage locker. Armaan, Omisha, and Alina leave in their private jet. While in the jet, Armaan points his gun at Alina, revealing that all along he was planning to kill her and take her money. Suddenly, Ranveer crashes through the wall and reveals that Alina never poisoned his drink. Alina tells Armaan that she was on Ranveer's side ever since Armaan planted the bomb in her car. Ranveer reveals that RD never betrayed him, and that he himself told RD to inform Armaan of the real plan. This was to make Armaan think he was ahead of Ranveer. Ranveer then reveals that he had seen a picture of Sonia's sister before he even met Omisha. Therefore, he knew all along that Omisha was on Armaan's side. This leads to a fight between Ranveer and Armaan on the plane, while Alina and Omisha watch fearfully. The plane begins to spiral out of control after Armaan breaks a window. During the fight, Armaan reveals that before Sonia was with Ranveer, she was dating Armaan, but she lied to him and stole his money, which is why he had her killed. He then shoots the pilot and all but one parachute. As the plane is about to crash, Armaan and Omisha take the parachute escape with the real Shroud and the money. Ranveer and Alina then also escape the plane, but with nothing. When Armaan and Omisha give the Shroud to Godfather Anza, it is inspected and revealed to be fake. Then, they give the money to Godfather Anza, but that is also fake. As a punishment, Anza takes everything from Armaan: his casinos, his money, his house, his cars, his yachts, and even Omisha. As Armaan leaves, he vows to get revenge on Ranveer. Ranveer lays flowers on Sonia's grave as Alina watches on. They then meet up with RD and Cherry, and Ranveer gives RD 10% of the money they made from ruining Armaan. There, Ranveer reveals that the Shroud was never even stolen from the Church of Turin because it was too holy to be sold in the underworld market. RD then tells Alina that he never trusted her even though Ranveer trusted her fully. Ranveer reveals how after everyone left the ruins of Antalya, Alina came back to take Ranveer to the jet. Then, they reveal how Alina switched the real money with the fake money while Ranveer and Armaan were fighting in the jet. RD then says that he does not want to risk his life again and makes Ranveer promise to never meet him again. Ranveer shakes on the promise, but then warns RD that promises are made to be broken. RD and Cherry then leave in one helicopter, while Ranveer and Alina leave in another.
